# 1 Reason Why You Should Install the MIS Credit Card Integration - Security
We have made a lot of enhancements to your MIS Software over the years but one we developed last year has generated a great deal of interest among MIS users. The enhancement that has generated so much interest is the new credit card interface. When we are describing the enhancement to distributors, we often get the question asked, “Why is this enhancement so important?” In response to that question, we will be sending you emails like this one periodically that highlight and explain different reasons this enhancement is so important. The biggest reason is security.
Why Is Security So Important? When you signed your merchant agreement, you agreed to comply with all the rules and regulations regarding the use of credit cards. These rules and regulations are known as PCI Compliance. The singular goal of the PCI Guidelines is to make the use of a credit card secure, to prevent the card data from getting into the wrong hands. One common violation is when credit card numbers are written down and saved for future use. There are many reasons the rules say don’t do this, but the biggest reason is that doing it can be costly to your business.
- Monthly Penalties Establishing patterns of violation of PCI guidelines can result in fines that can range from $5,000 to $100,000 per month depending upon your volume. I you are found to be in violation of the PCI guidelines you can be fined for every month you were in violation.
- Data Breaches When data is improperly stored the result can be loss of the data. This can result in fines as discussed above, but there are also costs such as: the cost of replacing the cards, increased rates by banks or processors, termination of merchant relationships, lawsuits from harmed parties, and costs related to finding and fixing the problem.
- Damaged Reputation Putting your customers’ bank card information at risk can result in irreversible damage to your reputation. Once data security has been endangered, it will be difficult for your clients to start trusting you again.
- Revenue Loss Major retailers that have experienced compromised card data, have reported significant loss of revenue as customers take their business elsewhere. You probably won’t be facing the $400,000,000 plus loss of revenue Target did when their system was compromised, but any loss of data is unacceptable.
